What you’ll need:

This tasty, simple Mexican feast couldn’t be easier to prepare – and you won’t even need to buy too many ingredients, either!

  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1 small onion
  • 1 jalapeno (or a few peppadews for a South African twist)
  • ½-1 tbsp of atchar each (to taste)
  • 3 tbsp of tomato relish or boerie relish each and 1 tbsp for the dip
  • 4-6 Taco shells
  • Skirt steak (for a classy twist)
  • Grated cheddar or mozzarella
  • Salt, pepper and lemon/lime juice to taste. Shredded coriander (or rocket) optional
  • 1 ripe avocado
  • Cream cheese
  • 1 can Mexican tomatoes

How to make your Valentine’s feast:

Start by pan-searing the steak to your taste with the garlic, onions and chilli/peppadew. You can use a spoon or two of butter for an extra-indulgent twist. While that’s sizzling, blend together your atchar and relish, tasting all the time until it has the perfect piquancy. Puree the avocado with a little lemon juice, salt and pepper. Heap it, the cream cheese and the Mexican tomatoes into three matching dipping bowls for the perfect sides to your Mexican feast. Cut the steak into strips, and layer into the tacos with a heaping spoon of your relish mix, a handful of grated cheese and the shredded coriander. Line them up on the plate and you’re ready to go.

With this elegant twist on a classic favourite, you’re sure to win hearts and stomachs alike. You can even add your own unique sparkle to the mix with extra toppings (you can even try our crunchy gherkins).
